Upper Mustang Trek Overview
The Upper Mustang Trek is one of the most extraordinary journeys in Nepal, offering a completely different experience in terms of landscape, culture, and people. Located in the trans-Himalayan region, this trek takes you through arid desert valleys, ancient cave monasteries, and fortified villages that preserve centuries-old Tibetan Buddhist traditions.
The route gives you access to nearly every major village in Upper Mustang, along with historic monasteries and hidden caves carved into cliff walls. You'll enjoy stunning views of Himalayan peaks such as Dhaulagiri and Annapurna, along with other mountains rising above 6,000 meters.
Once an independent kingdom, Mustang maintained direct relations with Tibet, and its culture still reflects this deep connection. Tibetan Buddhism and Himalayan traditions remain vibrant here. This trek is especially recommended for those interested in sociology, anthropology, and archaeology, as noted by explorers like Tony Hagen, Giuseppe Tucci, and Michel Peissel, who documented Mustang extensively in their research and writings.
With the road to the Tibetan border now accessible, it’s possible to drive to Kora La Pass (4,660m) by jeep—the highest point of the journey. Spending two nights in Lo Manthang, the walled capital of Mustang, offers time to explore ancient monasteries, the royal palace, and interact with the local people.
The famous Tiji Festival, celebrated every May in Lo Manthang over three days, is a vibrant display of Mustang’s spiritual and cultural heritage.
This trek is ideal for adventurous travelers who enjoy multi-day hikes. While moderately challenging with a few long walking days, it rewards trekkers with unique experiences that can't be found elsewhere. The best time to undertake the Upper Mustang Trek is from April to early November, including the monsoon months, as the region lies in a rain shadow and remains dry even during the rainy season.
