Overview of Langtang Gosaikunda Trek
This Trek is perfect for travelers who enjoy long, immersive walks through diverse landscapes. Langtang, located north of Kathmandu, is one of Nepal’s most popular trekking regions alongside Annapurna and Everest. On clear days, you can even see Langtang Lirung (7,234m) from Kathmandu itself.
The trek begins with three days of walking through beautiful rhododendron and bamboo forests before opening into the wide Langtang Valley, where herds of yaks and horses graze peacefully beneath towering snow-capped peaks.
At the heart of the valley lies Kyanjin Gompa (3,900m), a traditional village rich in Tibetan culture and the last settlement where we stay overnight in the Langtang region. A hike up to Kyanjin Ri (4,600m) rewards you with spectacular panoramic views of Langtang Lirung and its surrounding glaciers.
Another major highlight of this trek is the sacred Gosaikunda Lake (4,381m), revered by Hindus, Buddhists, and shamans alike. Every August during Janai Purnima, pilgrims and shamans (Jhakris) visit the lake to renew their spiritual energy and knowledge. Crossing Lauribina Pass (4,610m), the highest point of the trek, you will descend into the beautiful Helambu Valley before returning to Kathmandu.
This trek is ideal for those who love multi-day walks and are prepared for a moderate to challenging journey, with some long days and high passes. Depending on your time availability, the trek can be done only in Langtang Valley or extended to include Helambu Valley.
Best seasons: March to May and September to late November.
Welcome at the airport and transfer to the hotel, walk around the city, Thamel and local market.
Swoyambhu : Buddhist stupa on the the hill, Patan : 2nd city with various pagoda style temples and old palace, Bugmati : beautiful cultural village of wood sculptors and Kathmandu Durbar square, city of temples with living goddess.
A day spent on road of hills.
1st day of the trek, follow Langtang River, the trail goes inside a beautiful forest to reach Bamboo and continue ascending to Lama Hotel, as this is the 1st day, it is a comparatively difficult day to be in this situation. Lama Hotel, does not represent the name as Hotel, there are a few lodges to accommodate trekkers. BLD in Lodge.
We are already inside Langtang National park, another day inside the forest upto Ghodatabala, continue to the village in wider valley and less trees. Langtang was highly damaged due to earthquake in 2015 and bounced back very quickly. Very beautiful view of Langtang mountains. Lodge on BLD
We feel the altitude, need to walk slowly and take time to breath, several tea houses on the way, you can enjoy wide valley, beautiful mountain, pray flags and wall along the trail. We reach Kyanjin for lunch and visit village. Lodge on BLD
Early breakfast and climb upto Kyanjin Ri, the highest point of this valley (2:30hrs), real view of Langtang Lirung and glacier, back for lunch and trek continues to Langtang. Lodge on BLD
(If you want to climb Yala Peak, 5520m, 2 more days needed, included 1 night in the tent, real view of several mountains and glaciers.)
Way back to Riche, same valley. View is different as coming back. Lodge on BLD.
We go down to Dovan via Bamboo to catch trail to Thulo Syabru, ascend to the village, important village of the region, mix of modern and typical houses. Lodge on BLD
Today, the trail goes uphill all day, inside the rhododendron and pine forest. We stop for lunch at Sing Gompa (night stop is also possible, lodges are better) monastery and cheese factory. Lodge on BLD
Another beautiful day to our beautiful destination of the trek, full day ascend in different climate, no trees. The highest point we sleep, be prepared for freezing night and early wake up to go through Lauribina (Gosainkunda) Pass, exciting and unforgettable moment for tomorrow morning. Lodge on BLD
Exciting day of the trek, wake up early morning and ascend up to the pass via several holy lakes (Ganesh Kunda, Surya Kunda etc. ) (approx 1h30), enjoy the pass and down to Phedi, steep and some times slippery trail, take little rest and continue to Ghopte, just few lodges. Lodge on BLD
We follow up and down trail to Tharepati, change the valley and arrive in Helembu, popular for apple once upon a time. Follow trail inside rhododendron forest and cross Sherpa villages. Lodge on BLD .
Again interesting day of the trek, cross several villages, fields and forest. We are approaching Kathmandu valley, we exit Langtang national park to enter Shivapuri National park. Chisapani, means cold water, is a village on the hill, sometimes cold and windy, beautiful view of Himalayan Range of east of Nepal. You may meet many young Nepali on motorbikes as the the road goes from Kathmandu. Lodge on BLD.
Enjoy sunrise and the last breakfast in the mountain, ascend upto Borlang Bhanjyang (2430m) and down to Sundarjil (means beautiful & pure water), source of drinking water for Kathmandu valley. End of the trek . Catch a bus to Kathmandu, stop at Bouddhanath for visit and blessing. Bye bye to the staff, end of the service. Night in the Hotel on B/B
