Explore the ancient kingdom of Upper Mustang by Jeep – a unique adventure through Nepal’s mystical trans-Himalayan region. Unlike other parts of Nepal, Upper Mustang features dramatic desert landscapes, centuries-old monasteries, and rich Tibetan culture that is still alive today.

With newly constructed roads, travelling to Upper Mustang by jeep became hassle-free, reaching up to Kora La Pass (4,660m) on the Tibetan border, allowing you to access remote villages and sacred sites comfortably. You’ll visit historic places like Lo Manthang, Choser, and Dhakmar, see ancient cave monasteries, and interact with locals in traditional settlements.

Upper Mustang is ideal for those interested in anthropology, culture, and Himalayan Buddhism. This journey offers a deep cultural experience combined with breathtaking views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and other snow-capped peaks above 6,000 meters.

The Tiji Festival, held every May in Lo Manthang, is one of the most colorful and spiritual events in the region.

Best Season: April to early November. Mustang lies in the rain shadow, so it's suitable even during the monsoon.

Optional full-day cultural sightseeing around Kathmandu Valley. Visit Swayambhunath, the famous Buddhist stupa on a hill overlooking the city. Explore Patan, the second-largest city in the valley, known for its pagoda-style temples and palace complex. Continue to Bugmati, a beautiful cultural village of traditional wood sculptors. End the day at Kathmandu Durbar Square, the old royal square with temples and the residence of the living goddess (Kumari).

Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara by tourist bus (6–7 hours). Evening walk along Phewa Lake.

Take a short scenic flight to Jomsom. Drive along the Kaligandaki River to Kagbeni and Chhusang, visiting ancient villages and monasteries en route.

Today is one of the most scenic days of the tour. Drive through stunning arid landscapes, crossing villages like Chele, Samar, and Syangbochen. Optional short hike to Chungsi Cave Monastery.

Continue driving through the dry, high-altitude terrain toward Ghami, one of the larger settlements in Mustang. The village is surrounded by barley fields and traditional stone houses. After a short stop and exploration, proceed to Dhakmar, a village known for its dramatic red cliffs in the background. Overnight stay at a lodge in Dhakmar.

After breakfast, drive to Tsarang, an important historical village with a large monastery and expansive agricultural fields. Enjoy lunch and visit the village before continuing on the wide road north toward Lo Manthang. As you approach the capital, you’ll cross a final pass at 3,950 meters, offering a magnificent view of the walled city. Lo Manthang is filled with traditional flat-roofed houses, narrow streets, ancient monasteries, and beautiful wall paintings. Overnight in Lo Manthang.

Day 8 :
Lo Mantang

Spend the day discovering the highlights of this ancient capital. Visit several historic monasteries, interact with local residents, and explore the old royal palace, which may be open for public visits depending on the season. Lo Manthang offers a true sense of stepping back in time.

Today is one of the most memorable parts of the trip. Drive north to Choser, the final settlement before the Tibetan border, home to cave monasteries carved into cliffs. Then continue to Kora La Pass, at 4,660 meters, which marks the official border with Tibet. Enjoy views of the broad valley and nearby mountains. After lunch at a local tea house, return to Lo Manthang for the night.

Begin your return journey. First, drive back down to Kagbeni, stopping for lunch. Then continue uphill to Muktinath (3,800m), a revered Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage site known for its 108 water spouts.
